Heart Pine School is a 501(c)(3), non-profit school offering an educational curriculum inspired by Waldorf and nature for grades 1 – 6 (adding 7th grade in 2015-2016 and 8th grade in 2016-2017). Heart Pine School embraces children’s natural love of learning, enriching childhood by direct experience of arts, science, and the living earth.
In case you missed our event at Cymplify this summer, check out the demonstration that our 6th grade class teacher Mr. Kless did that night!
The standing wave flame tube is the invention of German physicist Heinrich Rubens. Recreated here is a modern day version using a perforated steel tube pressurized with propane gas coupled to a speaker and tone generator.
In the above demonstration you will see after the tube is pressurized and ignited, the flames are relatively equal in height. After sound is introduced at various pure frequencies, pressure waves travel down through the tube, reflect off the end cap and travel back. Along certain points of the tube high pressure peaks emanating from the speaker membrane will meet up with low pressure troughs returning from the end cap, canceling each other to a relative neutral pressure that can be visually seen as wave nodes. Along the other points, alternating high pressure peaks and low pressure troughs merge creating the overall flame display of a smooth resonate standing wave.
After completing their Physics and Chemistry blocks in middle school, Heart Pine students develop an understanding of standing waves and their dynamics in a physical system. The Rubens tube observed at various frequencies and resulting wavelengths enables students to measure the speed of sound in propane. This is just a preview of one of the many planned future laboratory lessons.
